Where Clutter Collects: A Room-by-Room Guide to Decluttering Your Home
Clutter has a way of migrating and accumulating throughout your home. Fall is the perfect time to tackle those long-ignored hot spots.
Where should you start decluttering?
Walk through your home and notice where things tend to pile up. These common clutter spots give you a practical room-by-room starting point:
- Entryway: Sort the mail, shoes, bags, and other things that land there when everyone comes home. Give everyday items a place to go.
- Kitchen: Check drawers and cabinets for duplicate gadgets and tools you rarely use. Keep the ones you reach for.
- Living room: Look at shelves and surfaces crowded with knickknacks. Leave room for the pieces you enjoy seeing.
- Bedrooms: Go through out-of-season clothes and anything that no longer fits or gets worn.
- Bathrooms: Check toiletries and products that have accumulated in cabinets and drawers.
- Dining room: Revisit serving pieces you haven’t used in years.
- Garage and storage areas: Sort duplicate tools and unopened boxes. If you have a basement, include it in this pass.
- Yard: Clear out broken planters and other outdoor items you’ve been meaning to deal with.
You don’t need to tackle every room in a weekend. Choose one drawer, shelf, or closet and finish that space first.
